As a young boy with the desire and ambition to become a racing driver – but zero family money – (or, indeed, family!) - I had to think fast, as well as drive fast. Completely obsessed with all things motorsport, I needed to develop a unique skill set that would help underwrite these sporting ambitions. Communication: I could easily articulate my passion and knowledge of the sport. I read, and researched exhaustively. And traded those self-taught skills for ‘seat time’. It’s how it all started for me. Gratitude to Mike Jordan.
I've been teaching on the racetrack since '84 - initially to pay for my first tentative laps in a Formula Ford 1600 - first at Mallory Park for Mike Jordan's 'Apex Racing School' - then, in '85 - I added the 'Ian Taylor Racing School' - finally in '86, the invitation came to join Silverstone.
Silverstone has been 'home' for nearly forty years - and continues to be so. Despite a remit that includes 'Director of Race School Development', Bushy Park Barbados, 'Live Show Presenter', Whilton Mill, 'Board Member - Race Committee' MSUK, - my main residency is Silverstone. I am 'Chief Training Instructor' for the circuit, 'Head of Race Training' - and 'Deputy Chief Instructor'. It's ever evolving.
2025 sees the release of my most recent training video 'Welcome to Racing' for MSUK, detailed here. I 've made three of these documents now, the first back in the early nineties. Every person applying for a race licence watches this film, the same as every person who drives on a retail experience at Silverstone -- sees one of my bespoke briefing films, every retail kart racer at Whilton Mill - or Bushy Park Barbados learns from a briefing video I presented. The list goes on - I actually can no longer remember all of the motorsport training videos I've made ... thankfully.
Add in my TV presenting work 'The Race' for 'SKY ONE', 'GT Academy' for 'Dave', all of the cameos and guest appearances for shows such as 'Richard Hammond's Workshop', 'BBC Breakfast', etc. - it's quite a body of work.
Then there's 'automotive'. My training films here include content for clients such as Nissan, Fiat, Opel, Citreon, Triumph Motorcycles - and 'live' shows for almost everybody in the industry, as my CV and references will attest. Click here for an insight
